Beautiful Handmade Wooden Furniture
We are Marc Wood Bespoke Joinery and from our farmhouse workshop in rural Somerset, we design and handcraft beautiful modern rustic furniture, mirrors, and picture frames from sustainable natural wood.
We offer in-house designs and custom-made furniture for those who want creative design with traditional craftsmanship using high-quality natural materials.
Our Story
Our small business started 8 years ago when designer-maker Marc studied joinery technique at college after years of enjoyable home woodworking projects, including our own VW camper van interior.
Following his training Marc was able to put his creative furniture designs into practice using reclaimed and sustainable natural wood; together with wife Rachel and super-cute pet assistant Marv they run Marc Wood Bespoke Joinery in Somerset, where everything continues to be handmade by Marc and our team of 6 talented local staff.
Inspired by the West-Country
Marc has an imaginative art and design background, and our authentic modern-rustic furniture designs are inspired by a fusion of styles.
From the mellow resonance of a traditional Somerset farmhouse to modernist curves, and a contemporary industrial look.
We specialise in a variety of wooden bathroom and kitchen cabinets, chunky wall mirrors, picture frames and inbuilt or free-standing storage concepts, for use throughout your home.
Sustainability & Reducing Waste
We love our natural environment and living in the West-Country we are fortunate to have wild landscapes and award winning clean beaches on our doorstop.
We have made a commitment to running our small business with sustainability in mind, minimising waste and re-using discarded materials.
Our long-term plan is to install equipment to enable renewable energy at home and at our farmhouse workshop.
Our Favourite Dovetail Joint
The essence of our design can be seen in our use of the angular ‘Dovetail’ joint which has become our signature.
Among the more contemporary characteristics of our handcrafted furniture designs are the subtle shaped corners of our cabinets and storage units, which often combine with our simple ‘hidden’ integrated wooden handles for a fluid appearance (round wooden or cast-iron handles are also available)
Bespoke & Inbuilt Options
We are always happy to create something bespoke and we can adapt our designs to include alternative features such as hinges, handles, shelf spacings etc.
We offer inbuilt storage and bookshelves locally, for a consultation and to discuss your ideas please contact Marc and Rachel.
Where You Can Buy
You can view our furniture collection on our website, buy from our Etsy.com shop and at the Ilminster Emporium in Somerset.
We have many excellent reviews on Etsy, Google and Yell.com.
We offer a 10% discount off our Etsy.com prices for direct orders and while we are upgrading our site to ecommerce we can accept payment via BACS or PayPal; our Ilminster Emporium shop prices are also set at this discounted rate.
Life in Somerset
Our West-Country location is intrinsic to our lifestyle and provides much design inspiration for Marc.
Our characterful rural workshop is set within a courtyard of 19th Century farm buildings which are shared among a lively local artisan community.
The multitude of natural places and wildlife which we encounter in Somerset varies from woodland, moorland, and coastal sites with both Exmoor and Lyme Regis close by.
Our local town of Ilminster takes its name from the River Ile and the beautiful Medieval Minster church of St Mary’s built in distinctive mellow Hamstone.
There is an enthusiastic artistic community in the town with the long established Meeting House arts centre and head offices of fashion designer Alice Temperley set at either end of the colonnaded market square.
Visit us at the Ilminster Emporium
We have a shop space in the Emporium which is located just opposite the Minster Church on Silver Street.
We have been part of the Emporium since its opening nearly 18 months ago and you can view examples of our furniture collection including our mirror with shelf, bathroom cabinets, picture frames and shelving.
It is well worth a visit for an array of handmade artisan gifts and homewares from local Somerset traders, the Emporium occupies the old Dyers drapers shop building with interesting original shop features from the 19th and early 20th century which are now grade listed.
